Acupressure can increase the aerobic performance of young healthy males by more than 10%, according to research from Turkey. Forty young healthy participants were randomly divided into intervention and control groups. Three-minute finger-tip massage of the points Neiguan P-6, Juque REN-14 and Xinshu BL-15, which were then covered by capsaicin plasters, was applied in the intervention group, versus a placebo acupressure procedure in the control group. VO2max (a measurement of the maximum amount of oxygen that an individual can utilise during exercise) was measured in both groups during a six-minute step test, once at baseline and once after the intervention. VO2max in the acupressure group was found to increase significantly from baseline, whereas that in the placebo group remained unchanged. The authors suggest that acupressure decreased participants’ anxiety levels, which allowed better utilisation of available energy sources.
