Acupuncture can improve the effect of drug treatment for chronic headache, according to research carried out in Brazil. Thirty-four patients were randomised to true acupuncture (individualised points for each headache type, based on TCM) or sham (non-insertive needling at the same points) groups. Both groups continued with their prescribed medications for pain. Compared with the sham group, the true acupuncture group showed significantly greater effectiveness in controlling headache pain in all measured domains, including number of headaches, pain intensity, quantity of analgesics used and quality of life.
