Chinese authors of a systematic review have found that acupuncture is associated with a greater immediate pain relief effect compared with sham acupuncture and analgesic injections. Thirteen studies involving a total of 1077 participants that compared acupuncture with other interventions for disease-related pain were included in their analysis. Real acupuncture showed significantly greater pain relief from baseline within 30 minutes, compared with both sham acupuncture and analgesic injection, with no serious adverse events associated with acupuncture.
