Current evidence is suggestive of a benefit for acupuncture for the prevention of cardiac arrhythmias, conclude Chinese researchers. A total of 13 trials with 797 patients met their criteria for analysis, however most were judged to be of poor methodological quality. Meta-analysis showed clinical equivalence between acupuncture and conventional treatment (anti-arrhythmic drugs [AAD]) for paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia. In several sub-group analyses (ventricular premature beat and sinus tachycardia) acupuncture with or without AAD showed clear benefit over AAD alone.
