Acupuncture does not significantly improve upon conventional treatment for breast cancer survivors with persistent breast cancer-related lymphoedema (BCRL), according to American researchers. Eighty-two women with moderate BCRL lasting greater than six months were randomised to acupuncture or a wait list control which allowed usual care if already underway. Acupuncture consisted of twice weekly manual needling at Zhongwan REN-12 and Zhongji REN-3, plus bilateral Jianliao SJ-14, Jianyu L.I.-15, Chize LU-5, Hegu L.I.-4, Zusanli ST-36 and Sanyinjiao SP-6, over six weeks. No significant difference was found between groups in terms of arm circumference or bioimpedance.
