Acupuncture at Neiguan P-6 combined with amiodarone therapy appears to be superior to amiodarone alone in preventing early recurrence of atrial fibrillation (AF) after catheter ablation in patients with persistent AF. A research team from China randomised 85 patients into acupuncture and control groups. In the control group, amiodarone was taken orally from the first day after the procedure. Patients in the acupuncture group additionally received daily manual needling at bilateral Neiguan P-6 for seven days post-procedure. After three months, the acupuncture group demonstrated a significantly lower rate of AF recurrence compared with the control group (12.5 percent versus 33.3 percent). Serum levels of inflammatory markers decreased in both groups after ablation, however, the decrease in the acupuncture group was found to be significantly greater than in the control group. The authors speculate that stimulation of Neiguan P-6 exerts a modulatory function on the autonomic nervous system via the median nerve and the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway.
