Acupuncture can improve vascular stiffness and haemodynamic parameters in hypertensive individuals. A joint Russian and American research team compared the effects of eight weeks of acupuncture therapy with a no-treatment control in 45 middle-aged patients with hypertension. The acupuncture points used were bilateral Zusanli ST-36, Shangjuxu ST-37, Jianshi P-5, Neiguan P-6, Taichong LIV-3, Gongsun SP-4 and Quchi L.I.-11. Brachial and aortic blood pressure, wave reflection and arterial stiffness significantly decreased following acupuncture, but not in the control group. The authors conclude that acupuncture improves resting aortic vascular function and therefore could be effective in the prevention and treatment of hypertension.
