Acupuncture can improve tremor in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients by affecting the brain’s cerebrocerebellar pathways. A Chinese RCT randomised 41 PD patients with tremor to true acupuncture (Baihui DU-20, Fengchi GB-20, scalp Chorea Tremor Control Area), sham acupuncture or a waiting list, for 12 weeks. All patients additionally received medication (levodopa). Real acupuncture improved Parkinson’s-related symptom scores, including tremor, movement and daily life activities. fMRI showed that real acupuncture had specific effects on brain regions involved in the motor and cognitive management of movement, including the cerebellum, thalamus and motor cortex.
