Acupuncture could provide valuable support for women with antenatal depression, report Australian researchers. Eight participants who had completed an eight-treatment intervention as part of a pragmatic randomised controlled trial evaluating acupuncture for antenatal depression were interviewed. Women reported that conventional treatments for depression had been inadequate or unsatisfactory, or were now unacceptable during pregnancy. They described gaining benefits from acupuncture that they felt enabled them to better manage their lives and the changes brought by pregnancy. After treatment, women reported relief from symptoms, and felt that the benefits of treatment were cumulative and ongoing.

Women's experiences of having depression during pregnancy and receiving acupuncture treatment-A qualitative study. Women Birth. 2017 Nov 15. pii: S1871-5192(17)30618-2.
