Acupuncture can be used to prevent escalation of symptoms experienced by patients undergoing autologous haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (AHCT, aka bone marrow transplant). Sixty patients with multiple myeloma undergoing chemotherapy followed by AHCT were randomised to receive either verum (Baihui DU-20, Yintang M-HN-3, Shenmen HE-7, Neiguan P-6, Zusanli ST-36, Sanyinjiao SP-6, Taixi KID-3, Taichong LIV-3 and ear Shen Men) or sham acupuncture (non-inserted needles taped in place at the same points) once daily for five days, starting the day after chemotherapy. Verum acupuncture was significantly better at reducing nausea, lack of appetite and drowsiness at 15 days compared with sham. Patients receiving sham acupuncture were also more likely to increase pain medication use post-transplantation.
