The Chinese herbal formula Dang Gui Shao Yao San (DGSYS), may be effective for the treatment of primary dysmenorrhea (PD) according to Korean systematic review authors. Data from 14 studies (1215 women) were analysed. In comparison to western medication, (DGSYS) showed a higher total effective rate (risk ratio [RR]  1.16) and a higher pain reducing effect (mean difference [MD] = -0.86). Compared with placebo, DGSYS was superior to placebo in reducing pain (MD = -1.1) and also in reducing consumption of rescue medication during the menstrual period (MD = -2.3). Compared with other herbal medicines, the subgroup analysis showed that DGSYS had a higher total effective rate (RR 1.21). DJS with moxibustion as an adjuvant therapy was also shown to be more effective than western medication (RR 1.47).
