Ear acupuncture can reduce disability and increase tissue temperature in people with chronic spinal pain. A Brazilian clinical trial randomised 110 people with complaints of pain in the spinal column into three groups: true acupuncture, placebo acupuncture and a no-treatment control group. In the acupuncture treatment group, semi-permanent needles were applied at Shenmen, Kidney, Sympathetic, Cervical Vertebra, Thoracic Vertebra and/or Lumbar Vertebra, depending on the location of the pain. In the placebo group, a single needle was applied at the Eye point, deemed not to be related to the condition being treated. Both groups received five sessions of ear acupuncture once a week, over a period of one-and-a-half months. A significant reduction in disability was found in the treatment and placebo groups between the initial and final assessments, and at the end of a 15 day follow-up period. Improvement of disability in the treatment group was significantly better than that in the placebo and control groups.
