Chinese authors have reviewed brain imaging evidence that explains the effects of acupuncture on Alzheimer's disease (AD). The authors analyse brain responses to acupuncture at cognitive-related acupoints (Baihui DU-20, Shenmen HE-7, Zusanli ST-36, Neiguan P-6 and Taixi KID-3) from perspectives of point specificity and point combinations. They conclude that neuroimaging methods suggest that acupoint specificity is a significant factor impacting brain responses, and that synergistic effects of different point combinations can reinforce or weaken one another, activating different brain areas and impacting the therapeutic effects of acupuncture in AD.
