Malignant mesothelioma is an asbestos-related fatal disease with no effective cure. Now a Japanese study has found that epigallocathechin-3-gallate (EGCG) - found in green but not in black tea - caused apoptosis (cell death) in five different human mesothelioma cell lines. The authors of the study now propose to test high doses of EGCG on animals with mesothelioma. There is no evidence yet that drinking green tea can achieve the same results. (EGCG induces human mesothelioma cell death by inducing reactive oxygen species and autophagy. Cancer Cell International 2013, 13:19).
