Chinese research suggests that Xiang Bin granules (XB) can effectively promote the recovery of gastrointestinal function after gynaecological surgery. Seventy subjects undergoing gynaecological surgery were randomly allocated to either a treatment group who took XB (Bing Lang [Semen Arecae Catechu], Ren Shen [Radix ginseng], Wu Yao [Radix Linderae], Chen Xiang [Resinatum Lignum Aquilariae] and Tao Ren [Semen Pruni Persicae]), or a placebo group. Treatment with XB appeared to facilitate the restoration of normal gastrointestinal motility (measured as a significantly shorter time to first post-operative flatus). Blood tests showed that this restoration of gastrointestinal function was accompanied by increases in levels of important gastrointestinal hormones and reduced secretion of the inflammatory marker CRH.
