American researchers have documented a clear and neuroanatomically relevant relationship between facial acupoints and the branches of the trigeminal nerve. A literature review, cadaver dissection, and neuroanatomical stimulation of the trigeminal nerve were conducted, and results were compared with standard textbook descriptions of acupoint and nerve locations. Areas of high nerve density were found to correspond to acupoints, which were located at overlying branches of the facial nerves as they emerge and bifurcate on the face.
