Seven weeks of auricular acupuncture (AA) therapy was associated with significant reductions in waist circumference in a group of overweight women, according to a study carried out in Grenada. A randomised trial was carried out in a group of 58 women between the ages of 20–30 with a BMI of 25 or higher who were assigned to AA or sham AA once a week for seven weeks. The four-point ear acupuncture protocol consisted of Shenmen, Point 1, Point 2 and Appetite Control. Results demonstrated a large and highly significant AA treatment effect for reduced waist circumference over the course of the seven-week intervention. The treatment effect for weight loss and BMI were not significant, perhaps due to the relatively short duration of the study.
