Brazilian researchers have found that laser acupuncture can reduce blood pressure in patients with essential systemic arterial hypertension. In a randomised trial, 102 participants who had been undergoing drug therapy for hypertension for a year or more, underwent six real or simulated laser-acupuncture sessions, over a period of six weeks. Acupoints (Yintang M-HN-3, Shenmen HE-7, Fengchi GB-20, Hegu L.I.-4, Taichong LIV-3, Quchi L.I.-11) were stimulated with a low-power infrared laser. All patients continued with their usual medications. A significant reduction in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure (to below 140/90 mm Hg), was observed among participants in the intervention group, but not in controls.
