A review by Taiwanese authors provides evidence that five different mechanisms are involved in the beneficial effects of acupuncture on ischaemic stroke rehabilitation: promotion of neurogenesis and cell proliferation in the central nervous system; regulation of cerebral blood flow in the ischaemic area; anti-apoptosis effects in the ischaemic area; regulation of neurochemicals; and improvement of impaired memory. They report that most frequently used acupoints in basic studies include Baihui DU-20, Zusanli ST-36, Quchi LI-11, Shuigou DU-26, Dazhui DU-14 and Hegu L.I.-4.
