Needling at Zhongwan REN-12 can help reduce blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), according to Indian clinicians. Forty T2DM patients were randomised into either acupuncture or placebo control groups. The participants in the acupuncture group were needled at Zhongwan REN-12 (0.5 cun depth with five minutes of manual stimulation), while those in the placebo control group were needled at a placebo point on the right side of the abdomen one cun lateral to Zhongwan REN-12 (similar depth and stimulation). For both groups, the needle was retained for 30 minutes. A significant reduction in blood glucose levels was observed in the acupuncture group compared to baseline. No such significant change was observed in the placebo control group.
