A systematic review carried out in China suggests that patent herbal medicines may be effective for stroke recovery. The authors evaluated 28 trials that included 2780 patients. Chinese herbal patent medicines were found to be effective in promoting recovery after stroke, improving neurological function and improving ability to perform activities of daily living. According to the the network meta-analysis, Shu Xue Tong and Bu Chang Nao Xin Tong were most likely to improve stroke recovery in patients without acupuncture. Mai Luo Ning, Xue Sai Tong and Bu Chang Nao Xin Tong were the patent medicines most likely to improve stroke recovery when combined with acupuncture.
