Traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) have multiple benefits for patients with osteoarthritis (OA), conclude the authors of a systematic review from China. Forty-four articles involving 4014 patients were subjected to meta-analysis. Compared with western medicine, TCMs significantly increased the total effective rate of OA treatment, as well as decreasing the recurrence rate. The TCMs group was also superior in terms of indicators of joint function, bone metabolism and inflammation. Network analysis indicated that Fu Zi (Radix Aconiti), Niu Xi (Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae), and other TCMs were able to inhibit inflammation and relieve pain in patients with OA. Acupuncture at Yinlingquan SP-9, Xiyan MN-LE-16, and other acupoints was also found to effectively improve clinical symptoms in patients with OA.
