Acupuncture adds benefit to medication for COPD

Acupuncture is an effective adjunctive non-pharmacological treatment for patients under medical treatment for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Twelve studies with a total of 798 participants were reviewed by Taiwanese authors. The results of their meta-analysis indicated that acupuncture plus medication was more effective than medication alone for improving health related quality of life in COPD patients. In the studies analysed, Feishu BL-13, Shenshu BL-23, Zusanli ST-36, Shanzhong REN-17, Dingchuan M-BW-1, Gaohuangshu BL-43, Fengmen BL-12, Chitze LU-5 and Lieque LU-7 were the most commonly used acupuncture points.
