The practice of Chinese herbal medicine is now firmly rooted in the West. This article discusses various aspects of
the current situation of Chinese herbal medicine in the West, including: the need to ensure that its plant medicines
are free from pollutants; the requirement to reduce its carbon footprint; the need for its clinical application needs
to be tailored to focus on treating the burgeoning list of non-communicable diseases associated with a Western
industrialised lifestyle. The author proposes that practitioners working in the West should make prudent use of
the rich tradition of Western herbal to provide effective and easily accessible plant medicines, and recommends
that the commercial growing of Chinese herbs in a Western setting is investigated.
