Acupuncture adds benefit to pelvic floor exercises for incontinence

Acupuncture can add benefit to pelvic floor exercises (PFE) for symptom improvement and quality of life in women with urinary incontinence (UI). Researchers from Hong Kong randomised 137 women with UI of various types and severities to receive either a weekly course of acupuncture along with PFE, or PFE alone for six weeks, with an additional 24 weeks of follow-up. Significant improvement in subjective UI symptoms was reported for acupuncture at all follow-up time points up to 24 weeks (odds ratio [OR]: 2.29), along with significantly reduced UI episode frequency and severity, and a trend towards improvement in incontinence impact scores. A history of two or more years duration of UI symptoms was associated with lower effectiveness of acupuncture (OR: 0.08).
