Acupuncture can promote tear secretion in dry eye

Acupuncture at Jingming BL-1 can promote tear secretion in dry eye disease (DED), report Chinese clinicians. One hundred and twenty DED patients were randomly divided into two groups. One group received acupuncture administered three times per week at bilateral Jingming BL-1, while the other was treated with artificial tears, over an eight-week period with a 24-week follow-up. For the primary outcome (Schirmer-I test, which measures basic and reflex tearing), the mean change from baseline was significantly different between the acupuncture (5.75) and AT (0.52) groups at week eight, with a significant between-group difference. Between-group differences in ocular surface disease index score change from baseline were also significant. Five patients experienced acupuncture-related adverse events.
