Acupuncture improves cognitive function post-stroke
Acupuncture can be a safe and effective treatment for post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI), according to a systematic review by Chinese authors. A total of 28 trials with 2144 participants were included in their meta-analysis. Results indicated that acupuncture groups benefited more than non-acupuncture groups with respect to cognitive scores as measured by Montreal Cognitive Assessment (merged mean difference 2.66) and Mini-Mental State Examination (MMD = 2.97). The results also showed that acupuncture in addition to standard therapies further enhanced their effectiveness in the short term.
