Brain mechanisms of acupuncture in depression
Chinese authors have conducted a review of the neurological mechanisms responsible for the successful treatment of depression using acupuncture and moxibustion. They report that recent advances in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) have provided new insights into the immediate effects of acupuncture on the brain, such as activation and negative activation, as well as the effects of different acupuncture methods and acupoints. Additionally, they have identified functional brain networks that are involved in the antidepressant activity of acupuncture, which include areas such as the hippocampus, amygdala, cingulate gyrus, frontal lobe and temporal lobe.
