Surround needling adds benefit to phototherapy for vitiligo

Surround needling in combination with narrowband ultraviolet B (NBUVB) phototherapy may be a promising treatment for vitiligo, according to a Taiwanese research team. Nine patients with 14 pairs of chronic stable nonsegmental vitiligo lesions took part in a 12-week, randomised, intra-individual, comparative clinical trial. Vitiligo lesions in the intervention group were treated with surround needling combined with NBUVB phototherapy, whereas those in the control group received NBUVB phototherapy only. At baseline, the modified vitiligo score in both groups of lesions was 93.07. Post-intervention, this score in the intervention group improved to 78.46, with a significant difference between baseline and post-intervention, while in the control group, the score improved to 91.92, with no significant difference having occurred. A statistically significant difference was found between the intervention group and the control group for the change in scores post-intervention.
